SUMMARY:"Rebel Abroad: A Stratford Subversive in the Heart of Empire" with Dr. Gordon Blaine Steffey
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually for “Rebel Abroad: A Stratford Subversive in the Heart of Empire\,” a public lecture by Dr. Gordon Blaine Steffey\, Vice President of Research & Collections and Director of the Jessie Ball duPont Memorial Library at Stratford Hall. \nThe events of April 19\, 1775 in Massachusetts Bay Colony are often remembered collectively as ‘the shot heard round the world.’ Skirmishes in and around Lexington & Concord between British Regulars and colonial Militia were only the first phase of the action. The next phase was a contest for control of the narrative about what actually happened\, a phase in which a Lee brother of Stratford was a primary actor! Join us online at 2 p.m. on Saturday\, April 19\, as we commemorate shots fired at Lexington & Concord and learn the gripping true story of how this Stratford born and raised Rebel Abroad waged a media war against British tyranny. \nPre-registration is required. The Zoom information will be shared prior to the event. \n$5 Virtual Registration \nRegister at: https://www.simpletix.com/e/rebel-abroad-a-stratford-subversive-in-th-tickets-206197

DESCRIPTION:Annual Lee Lecture: Unintended and Unexpected: Lee’s Army after Appomattox  \nSunday\, January 19\, 2025 2 PM  \nStratford Hall is delighted to announce that Caroline E. Janney will deliver the 2025 Lee Lecture in the Jessie Ball duPont Memorial Library at Stratford Hall.   \nCaroline E. Janney is the John L. Nau III Professor of the American Civil War and Director of the John L. Nau Center for Civil War History at the University of Virginia. A graduate of the University of Virginia\, she worked as a historian for the National Park Service and taught at Purdue University before returning to Virginia in 2018.  An active public lecturer\, she has given presentations at locations across the globe. SUMMARY:Commemorating the Lives: The Lee Men of Stratford Hall
DESCRIPTION:On January 18\, 2025\, Stratford Hall invites visitors to discover the Great House and grounds for the special admission price of $5–this is to commemorate the lives of Lee family men\, many of whom had January anniversaries. \nCome learn about founder Francis Lightfoot Lee (died January 1797)\, nicknamed ‘Loudon\,’ whom Mark Twain called “a citizen of the best and highest type”! Wander the halls walked by January-baby and radical Richard Henry Lee\, who proposed a declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1776! Study the military exploits of the revolutionary and future Governor of Virginia nicknamed ‘Light-horse Harry’ Lee\, another January-baby! And consider the early years of Harry’s youngest Stratford-born son\, Robert Edward Lee\, still one more January-baby! \nTake our Band of Brothers audio tour to discover the remarkable lives of all the Lee men\, from Stratford’s founder to a Revolutionary War intelligence agent to Andrew Jackson’s speechwriter and more. Stop by our Stratford at the Crossroads exhibit in the Visitor’s Center to get a close-up view of some of the objects owned and used by Lee family men and women\, including a book of sermons compiled by Hannah Lee Corbin\, a circa 1730 christening gown in which generations of Lees were received into the Anglican church\, and a set of mother-of-pearl-handled silver dessert knives given by French King Louis XVI to diplomat Arthur Lee! \nPreregistration not required. Tickets available at the gate the day of the event. \n$5.00 for ages 6+ (House and Grounds) \nFree for Children 5 & under \nRegister in advance: https://www.simpletix.com/e/commemorating-the-lives-the-lee-men-of-str-tickets-191389.
