SUMMARY:Commemorating the Lives: The Lee Men of Stratford Hall
DESCRIPTION:On January 18\, 2025\, Stratford Hall invites visitors to discover the Great House and grounds for the special admission price of $5–this is to commemorate the lives of Lee family men\, many of whom had January anniversaries. \nCome learn about founder Francis Lightfoot Lee (died January 1797)\, nicknamed ‘Loudon\,’ whom Mark Twain called “a citizen of the best and highest type”! Wander the halls walked by January-baby and radical Richard Henry Lee\, who proposed a declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1776! Study the military exploits of the revolutionary and future Governor of Virginia nicknamed ‘Light-horse Harry’ Lee\, another January-baby! And consider the early years of Harry’s youngest Stratford-born son\, Robert Edward Lee\, still one more January-baby! \nTake our Band of Brothers audio tour to discover the remarkable lives of all the Lee men\, from Stratford’s founder to a Revolutionary War intelligence agent to Andrew Jackson’s speechwriter and more. Stop by our Stratford at the Crossroads exhibit in the Visitor’s Center to get a close-up view of some of the objects owned and used by Lee family men and women\, including a book of sermons compiled by Hannah Lee Corbin\, a circa 1730 christening gown in which generations of Lees were received into the Anglican church\, and a set of mother-of-pearl-handled silver dessert knives given by French King Louis XVI to diplomat Arthur Lee! \nPreregistration not required.
