STRATFORD ARCHAEOLOGY

Archaeological excavations took place during the summer of 1998 in the vicinity of Stratford's outbuildings. As part of Stratford's continuing preservation efforts, a new drainage system will soon be installed around the buildings to prevent structural damage due to rising moisture.

Before this potentially ground-disturbing activity takes place, archaeologists from John Milner Associates, Inc. tested for archaeological resources. They discovered that much of the area around the outbuildings was disturbed during Stratford's restoration in the 1930s, thus destroying the archaeological record. In units near Stratford's kitchen, however, intact layers containing artifacts such as glass, nails and pottery were found.
