THE STRATFORD MILL
The mill was reconstructed in 1939 on the foundations of the original Lee mill which records indicate was constructed in the early 1740s. The huge waterwheel of the reconstructed mill turns wooden gears that power its millstones. Corn, wheat, oats and barley are ground, just as they have been for nearly 250 years, and are sold at the Plantation Store. Over the next year and a half Stratford's mill will undergo extensive reconstruction. Noted English Millwright Derek Ogden is in charge of the reconstruction effort. Originally from Birmingham, England, Mr. Ogden has over 50 years experience in the repair and reconstruction of windmills and watermills. He has resided in the United States since the mid-1970s plying his rare talents on the mills of America. The mill will operate on its regular schedule throughout 1998 until the major reconstruction phase begins. The restored structure will be a tangible reminder of the significance milling has had for mankind throughout the ages. Visit the mill at Stratford and witness the wonders of water power. The mill operates, when weather permits, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays March 1 through October 31 and Saturdays May 1 - October 31. The road to the overlook, mill and beach on the Potomac River is open to vehicular traffic from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (April 1 through mid-January), subject to weather and road conditions.
