Historical Preservation

"The soul of history is stories, and historic buildings have lots of stories to tell. It is essential that we exercise good stewardship so that these stories can live. . . .Surrounded with the tangible evidence of history, we take comfort in the realization that some things survive long beyond the span of a human lifetime."

- Richard Moe, President, National Trust for Historic Preservation, 27 April 1999, upon presenting the Robert E. Memorial Association with its prestigious President's Award

Beginning with the purchase of the Stratford Hall property in 1929, the Robert E Lee Memorial Association's primary focus has been the responsible stewardship of its historic resources. Our goal is to preserve and maintain, at the highest level, the plantation's historic and non-historic structures, archeological and paleontological resources, landscape features, agricultural setting, and natural and wildlife resources.
