Economic Life in Colonial Virginia

An Institute for Teachers


July 26-28, 2012

Designed around the Virginia Standards of Learning, this Institute will be held at historic Stratford Hall on Tidewater Virginia's Northern Neck and will cover topics such as:

  • Life in Colonial Virginia
  • The Plantation as an Economic Unit
  • Natural, Human and Capital Resources
  • Driver of Economic Change
  • Enslaved African Labor
  • Virginia Indians
  • Interpreting Historic Landscapes
  • Global Connections

The Institute faculty includes: Dr. Dawn Bowen (University of Mary Washington); Dr. Kevin Hardwick and Dr. James Wilson (James Madison University); and Dr. Don Zeigler (Old Dominion University).

Applications are now being accepted from teachers of United States and Virginia studies and pre-service teachers. To apply for the Institute and receive a Mary Dell Pritzlaff Fellowship, which provides full tuition, housing and the cost of most meals, please print out an application form and mail to Jon Bachman, Coordinator of Educational Events, Stratford Hall, 483 Great House Rd., Stratford, VA 22558 or fax it to 804-493-0333. The application deadline is April 16, 2012; since the program is limited to 30 participants, applicants are urged to apply as soon as possible.
