Bugs and Bones on the Beach
July 20, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm$8 – $50
Join us for a fun-filled day on the private beach of Stratford Hall in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Your class begins with a lecture on the geological history of the Calvert Formation and the remainder of the day is spent exploring the otherwise restricted-access beach, collecting fossils, picnic lunching, and even insect hunting. Depending on your individual level of knowledge and confidence, you may remain with your instructor or choose to strike out on your own. With the exception of an extremely rare fossil find, all of your collected materials are yours to keep.
Adults and children over 7 years of age are welcomed and each class can accommodate from 5 to 20 students. Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied and supervised by an adult participant. Digging in the adjacent cliffs and swimming are not permitted; however, walking along and in the shoreline is anticipated. Participants can either pack a picnic lunch or visit the on-site dining hall at some point during the day. Restrooms are available. If you are interested in overnight accommodations, Stratford Hall offers lodging in one of the The Inn’s guest houses. Scout, school and church groups are welcomed.
Stratford Hall will provide each participant with a blaze orange safety vest. Participants, for their own comfort, may wish to pack (if lodging overnight) or have the following items: bug spray, sunscreen, towel/blanket, bottled water, picnic lunch/snacks, and a collecting bag (backpack or small fanny pack). All participants should wear comfortable beach clothing and shoes.
