Stratford during Philip Ludwell Lee's Ownership

Stratford during Philip Ludwell Lee's ownership Philip Ludwell Lee inherited Stratford Hall Plantation at the death of his father Thomas Lee in 1750. A member of the ruling Council of Virginia, Colonel Phil was a prominent figure in colonial society. He loved to entertain, and had a band made up of slaves and indentured servants. Guests would promenade on the roof platform connecting the two chimney clusters. The door on the river side opened onto a porch where visitors could dance under the stars.

Philip Ludwell Lee made many changes to the Great House. Research continues in an effort to solve these architectural mysteries. This is a conjectural model of Stratford's Great House as it may have looked when Colonel Phil and his family lived here.
